Strait Start: Parent Education
Strait Start is a model of early childhood parent education that is unique to the Torres Strait.
Guided by the YUMI principles, together with the Montessori philosophy, our services are designed to provide access to families of young children (from 3 months to 4 years of age) to a prepared learning environment that encourages natural learning processes.
Each service is delivered by a Coordinator, who’s role is to directly engage with families of young children to develop their confidence, skills and capacity to create the best conditions for children’s development.
The aim of the service is to empower families to promote increased levels of social and emotional security, psychomotor development and language acquisition in young children prior to their enrolment in formal schooling.
The service also partners with other agencies to promote the engagement of families of young children with maternal and child health and education support Services.

Community-owned, Montessori Child Care
Since 2012, YUMI Education has operated Iama Migi Kaziw Mudh - a long daycare centre on Iama (Yam Island).
Lead by Annie Baragud - a proud Torres Strait Islander and trained Montessorian - this service offers a nationally accredited child care to families of children aged between 15 months and four and half years for 45 weeks per year.
Like Strait Start, the centre uses a Montessori approach to childhood development, focusing routines and learning activities on sponsoring learning in all key developmental domains - including language, physical health, cultural and social development.
